Carmo Church

The Carmo Church, with its baroque facade and twin bell towers, is considered one of the finest churches in the Algarve region. It was built during most of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Disaster occurred in 1755 when the great earthquake that struck Portugal severely damaged the church. Then a new facade was designed by Diogo Gonçalves, including its famous bell towers, and today the church has some of the best gilded woodwork to be seen in the area.
