Castle of Silves
The history of Silves Castle in the historical and picturesque city of Silves is likely to date back to around the eighth century. The first mention of this red Moorish castle was by the famous Arab historian al-Razi in the tenth century. Today it is considered one of the best preserved castles in Portugal, located on top of a hill. Rising from the Aradi River, its courtyards offer stunning views of the city's skyline and the surrounding countryside. It was designated a National Monument in 1910 and is one of the finest examples of castles from Islamic times in Portugal.
