The small fort of Ponta da Bandeira, also known as the Fort of Our Lady of Penha de Franca or the Fort of Lagos, is located on the waterfront in the town of Lagos which has been the administrative capital of the Algarve since 1577. This fort, built around 1690, was part of the important defensive structures guarding the port From the raids of pirates and the Spanish, the army used it until the twentieth century, and it was restored in the sixties of the twentieth century, and today its interior is open to the public for a simple entrance fee.
