Fort St. Blaise was built to the west of Ponta Delgada in the sixteenth century with the aim of defending the city against pirate attacks, and it was part of the most important fortifications of the defense system of São Miguel Island, and today it is considered the most important example of military architecture in the sixteenth century and the strongest fortification in The island, despite the effects of the battles and renovations on it, but its building still impresses all who visit it, and it is home to the Azores Military Museum, and on its front wall there is a memorial to the soldiers of the First World War.
