Forte Begato
Forte Begato
This hill fort is located in the northern districts of Genoa and enjoys a strategic position on top of a large mountain. This relatively modern fort complex was established in 1818 and served as a defensive structure for many years until it declined in importance. The main part of the complex is the large central barracks which once housed over 300 soldiers and a range of artillery platforms. During World War II, the fort was used as a prison for prisoners of war. Although it is not possible to enter the building, it is still a great place to visit. Moreover, the view from the top is breathtaking and you can see the entire city of Genoa right before your eyes.
