The Monastery of Santa María de Pompero was one of the most important Benedictine monasteries in the area between the Douro and Minho rivers. It was founded by Gomes Echiegues and his wife Gontroda in 1102. It features three naves divided by arches with painted wooden ceilings, as well as an altar. It was rebuilt in the eighteenth century and has a semi-circular structure typical of the Romanesque style.
