Nieuwe Kerk
In the early 15th century, the Bishop of Utrecht granted permission from the Municipality of Amsterdam to build a new church on Dam Square, which it completed in 1509 and named de Neuve Kerk (New Church) in order to distinguish it from the old churches. Unfortunately, this building was seriously damaged in 1654 when large parts of it were consumed by fire. It was rebuilt a few years after the Great Fire, and designed to resemble Southern Gothic architecture.
