The Palace of the Dukes of Braganza is located in the heart of Guimarães. It was home to the first Dukes of Braganza from the 1520s, and it fell into disrepair after the 16th century when the dukes moved to Vila Ficosa. The palace was designated a National Monument in 1910, and was It was restored to its former glory, and today, on the ground floor of its northern wing, there is a small museum of contemporary art that houses pieces donated to the city by the painter José de Guimarães.
