Petőfi Bridge
Petőfi Bridge
The Petofi Bridge is located to the south of the Freedom Bridge over the Danube River. In the past it was called the Miklós Horthy Bridge and then the name was changed to the Petőfi Bridge after the famous Hungarian poet and revolutionary Sándor Petőfi. Its construction began in 1933 according to plans by Pál Álgyay Hubert, and it is noteworthy that structurally it lacks the usual lavish decoration of Budapest bridges. At the time Hungary was struggling with political and economic problems, so the main goal was functionality rather than beauty.
