Souda Bay War Cemetery
The Souda Bay War Cemetery is a military cemetery operated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in Souda Bay, Crete. It is the last resting place for the British Commonwealth war dead who lost their lives between 20 May and 31 May 1941, during the Battle of Crete. There you'll find rows of white tombstones on immaculate lawns, decorated with borders of flowers. Small pomegranate trees (the fruit of the underworld) were placed among the flowers and bushes along each row. At the sea borders of the Souda Bay necropolis there are large bushes of rosemary (a herb of remembrance), all important symbols of the last resting place of many of those who died in the Battle of Crete.
