St Patrick's Church opened its doors in early 1844, as work on its construction began with the blessing of the Stone Foundation, by Dr John Bede Ponting, the first Bishop of Australia. St. Patrick's Church is the second Catholic church built in Sydney, however it is considered the oldest Catholic church in the city, although St. Mary's Cathedral was the first Catholic church built, it was rebuilt in 1882.
