Chapel of Souls

The Church of the Spirits was the only church in Viana do Castelo until the mid-15th century and is known locally as the "Old Mother Church". It was renamed the Church of the Spirits because its churchyard was the burial place of King Afonso III. until the end of the nineteenth century, and all that remains of its original thirteenth-century structure is the arch in the south wall and the high altar cross.
