The Church of St. Demetrius is the main sanctuary dedicated to Demetrius, the patron saint of Thessaloniki, and dates back to the period when Thessaloniki was the second largest city in the Byzantine Empire. This church is characterized by ornate columns, colorful Byzantine mosaics, and an underground basement, which was originally built as a Roman bath, and is the place where the saint was imprisoned and martyred. The church also contains priceless Byzantine arts and icons, and all this and more makes visiting this church a unique experience.
