The Holy Trinity Cathedral was built to commemorate the 1,500th anniversary of the autonomy of the Georgian Orthodox Church and the 2,000th anniversary of the birth of Jesus in early 1989. The church is considered a symbol of Georgian national and spiritual revival. The project was funded at the time by anonymous donations from many men Business and ordinary citizens, and in 2004 on St. George's Day, the cathedral was consecrated by Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia.
