Republic Square

Republic Square is the heart of the old part of the city of Viana do Castelo and the location of many civil buildings of historical importance. Seven narrow lanes converge in this wide square, and its sides are lined with a distinguished group of restaurants and cafes whose tables are crowded with visitors in the summer, and the Chavarez Fountain is the central point. The square was built in 1559 according to a design by João Lopes.
