St Pauls Catacombs
The Catacombs of St. Paul are a typical complex of interconnected underground Roman tombs that were in use until the 4th century AD. They are located on the outskirts of the ancient Roman capital of Melite (today's city), where Roman law prohibited burials in the city. The catacombs of St. Paul represent the first and largest archaeological evidence of the presence of Christianity in Malta, and archaeological research of the site has revealed the existence of an extensive system of underground galleries and tombs dating back to the period between the third and eighth centuries AD.
